Louisiana World's Fair
|
During my tenure as president
of Michael Klepper Associates, the 1984 Louisiana World's
Fair, in New Orleans, was preceded by an event a year prior
called the "One Year Countdown." It was the World
Fair's first major promotional kickoff, and something spectacular
needed to be arranged.
I convinced the Today Show to send Willard Scott to New Orleans
- to do eight live remotes from the site of the coming World's
Fair. I arranged with the World's Fair directors eight different
staged scenarios that Willard could participate in, with dancers
and other acts. It was a smash hit, and for two hours, during
Willard's weather segments, each segment was expanded to include
his routines and interviews with dancers, actors, musicians
- and of course the Executive Director of the World's Fair.
One little sidenote: when I arrived in New Orleans prior
to Willard's arrival, I fell in love with a restaurant I happened
upon - Chef Paul Prudhomme's "Kay Paul's." I was
so taken with Paul's cuisine, that I brought Willard to the
restaurant, introduced him to the Chef, and it was the beginning
of a long "love affair" - not only between Willard
and Paul - but the prelude to many appearances by Chef Paul
on the Today Show, for many years to come.
